UTOH is the NGO that for 70 years has enabled Ukraine’s deaf population to maintain a reasonable standard of living by providing thousands of jobs through a network of 41 factories that it built, owns, and manages. Further, throughout this time, UTOH has reinvested factory profits back into the deaf community to build dozens of apartment buildings for their workers, 25 Cultural/Educational Centers for members of the community, one in each oblast and in the Republic of Crimea; and to support a social services staff and deaf interpreters who provide access to the hearing world. This access includes helping Ukraine’s deaf and hard-of-hearing population to communicate with health care workers at medical clinics and hospitals, with various government agencies and when necessary, with hearing neighbors.
